Christianity is about being forgiven by God, through Jesus – His life, death and ressurection – then choosing to follow Him. It is really that simple. But to get there, we need to understand a few key truths:
We are all sinners
Everyone of us has done wrong – not just by our own standards or others’, but before God, the creator of everything. The bible tells us that God is love, yet we have all rebelled against Him in our thoughts, attitudes and actions. Ever wondered why the world is so broken? That’s on us.
Sin separates us from a Holy God.
God is Holy – completely perfect and set apart. And perfection and sin don’t mix. To truly know God’s love, peace and joy, we would need ot be perfect too. But let’s be honest, left to our own devices – that ain’t happening anytime soon!
Jesus did what we could not
That’s why Jesus came. God became human to save us from sin and its consequences; guilt, shame, darkness now and eventually hell. He lived the perfect life we couldn’t, then took the punishment we deserved by dying on the cross. But He didn’t stay dead – He rose again, conquering sin’s ultimate consequence: death.
Salvation is a free gift
Because of Jesus, forgiveness and eterlife are freely offered to us. Being a Christian means accepting this gift – recognising it’s true value to us and living it’s true hope for the future. His love, acceptance and grace are immense and there for us to accept thanks to Jesus. Out of gratitude, we choose to live for Jesus
Following Jesus starts with faith, not works
Trying to live like Jesus without first being forgiven and born again is both impossible and pointless. Being a good person – even a religious person – won’t save us. Only Jesus can. And once we trust Him, we follow His word (the bible) not to earn our salvatio, but because we love him and know His way is best. Our faith is not a thing but an active relationship. It requires sacrifice and often we do suffer on this walk with God – we are His people in a world that does not know Him – we often fall and sin again and again – yet the grace of God is there for all repentant sinners. Jesus saves, Jesus forgives, Jesus keeps us, Jesus changes us, Jesus is our goal.
This is the gospel – the good news of Jesus for you today. Simple, powerful and life changing.
